Adventures in Risky Play
Author Rusty Keeler brought a draft of his new book to our team, along with a huge collection of fabulous photography. This plan for this project was to create a full color photo-heavy book about allowing young children to explore and take risks. In line with the theme, I aimed for the design of the book to bring the text and photos together in a playful and impactful way, helping readers connect with their own memories and childhood adventures.
Creating a full-color book that remained affordable and weaving together a diverse set of themes made this book design both challenging and rewarding. I chose brush strokes as a big design element of the book to evoke the feeling of movement, and a subtle shift in colors to guide transitions. This book won the top prize at the Independent Publishers Book Awards.
